How To Fix SearchUI.exe Suspended on Windows 10

The suspension of SearchUI.exe is often caused by your third-party antivirus software, which usually interferes with your background processes. The SearchUI or SearchUI user interface is part of the Microsoft Search Assistant.

If your searchUI.exe process is suspended, it means that you cannot use Cortana. Obviously, some people prefer to use Microsoft’s research assistant with their microphones. However, certain things or applications prevent you from using it.

It does not appear as an error dialog box telling you that the SearchUI.exe file is suspended, but you can see it when you open your Task Manager and from the processes therein listed.

This problem is not important and can be solved with simple and powerful solutions. Before we focus on that, however, let’s look at the reasons.

Causes for SearchUI.exe suspended on Windows 10

Searchui.exe suspension can be caused by several factors –

  • Third-party antivirus: If you are using a third-party antivirus, you might have seen the file suspended, because your antivirus is trying to stop it.
  • Outdated Windows: If you haven’t updated your Windows for a while, it may cause the file to freeze. The user interface is not perfect and must be constantly updated.
  • The corrupted package folder. Sometimes the reason for the file suspension is a corrupt Cortana package folder, which means you need to delete it.
Now is the time to find solutions.

Solution1: Check for Windows Update

Outdated windows may also be a reason for SearchUI.exe suspension. The user interface is not yet complete and requires frequent updates from its manufacturer, which is only available during the Windows update.

So if you don’t update your windows after starting off with the easy task, try to update your system. To check for updates, follow these steps:

  • Press Windows key + I to open settings.
  • Select Updates and Security.
  • Click on Check for updates.
  • If there is any update available, then update your system.

Solution 2: Fix Cortana’s Package Folder

A corrupt package folder can prevent the file from running. In this case, you should delete the secure boot folder. Follow this article to find out how to start your computer in Safe Mode. After you start your computer, follow these steps:

  • Press Windows key + X.
  • Select Command Prompt(Admin) or Windows Powershell(Admin).
  • Now enter the following command: RD /S /Q “C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\RoamingState”(Note: replace USERNAME with your system’s username).
  • Once you are done with command prompt, open the Windows Powershell (Admin).
  • Enter the following command: Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like “*SystemApps*”} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}.
  • Restart your system and check for the issue to be cleared.

Solution 3: Disable Antivirus

Some users have reported that their third-party antivirus has been suspended, which has resulted in its suspension. This is mainly due to Avast Antivirus – so if you are using Avast Antivirus or something else, please close your antivirus and restart your computer to see if the file is still paused.

Solution 4: Delete Roaming User Profile

If you are using a Roaming User Profile, it might also be a reason for this issue. Your Roaming user profile can generate certain issues with the SearchUI.exe file. In such a case, you need to delete your Roaming User Profile.

  • Right-click on This PC >> select Properties.
  • Select Advanced system settings.
  • The system properties window will pop up. Select settings found under User Profiles
  • Find the Roaming profile and Delete it.

Solution 5: iCloud Reinstallation

This could sometimes be a reason for the malfunction of SearchUI.exe. The iCloud might be interfering with the SearchUI process. If this is your case then you need to reinstall iCloud. Here are the steps to uninstall iCloud.

  • Click on the Start menu and search for the Control Panel. If you are using Windows 10 then you click on the Settings Gear icon.
  • In the Control panel, select the Uninstall a program option under the Program section.
  • Locate iCloud in the Control Panel program list and click on Uninstall.
  • iCloud’s uninstall wizard will open with two options:
    • Repair
    • Remove
  • In order to uninstall the program Select Remove and click Next.
  • You will receive a pop up asking that “Do you want to completely remove iCloud for Windows?”. Now select yes.
  • Click Finish to complete the uninstallation process.
  • Restart your computer and now reinstall iCloud.
